Her novels and tales of animal creatures, such as Squirrel Nutkin, Twinkleberry, Mrs Rabbit, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail were inspired from her imagination as well as real events involving domesticated and wild animals in her own life and that of her friends and cousins in the British countryside. Her works were written with a background of a variety of skills including that of an illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist. The Tale of Peter Rabbit, perhaps the best known of her works was first published in 1902, followed by the Tale of Squirrel Nutkin in the following year, and working with Norman Warne as her editor she published a total of 23 books.
