Tapestries are thought to have originated in ancient Greece, and important buildings such as the Parthenon, had tapestries throughout them.
However it was in the medieval period that the art of tapestry creation really developed.
Tapestries became the status symbol of the wealthy and noblemen. They not only provided decoration for the royal residences, but also provided a covering for openings, privacy around beds, and warmth inside castle walls.
When the royal court moved, they would be able to transport their tapestries rolled up, taking their status and décor with them wherever they went. In times of battle in the Middle Ages, tapestries often exchanged hands (and were often damaged) as they were part of the spoils.
