Firstly, there are the cherub angels from Raphael.
Where does this work of art come from?

Religious and Angel Wall Hanging

This tapestry is actually a detail from a painting by Raphael (1843-1520), sometimes referred to as “Raphael’s angels”, from the Sistine Madonna. In this larger work, there is also St. Sixtus and St. Barbara together with Madonna.
The fact that Raphael has created these cherubs as delightful child like beings has brought some intrigue from art critics.
This portrayal of the heavenly realm as cherubs has added so much appeal not only to Raphael’s works, but to an entire movement of art.
Now in so many modern portrayals of art, we have angels are now often portrayed with sweetness and beauty in a most charming form – the chrerub!
In contrast, we have the Cupidon tapestry:

Here, the angel is portrayed with a bow and arrow to represent a female cupid by French artist, William Bouguereau from 1875.

Interestingly, instead of a boy cherub as cupid the angel of love, we see a female angel, in an idyllic green forest landscape.

His other works also include a boy angel with butterfly wings kissing a girl in the woods.

With Bouguereu in the 19th century, we see a modernization and a more adventurous depiction of angels in art in romantic style.

Here’s another angel art work, by Lorenzo Monaco”(1410-1415):

This wonderful angel art tapestry is by Lorenzo Monaco,  Gothic painter from Florence.
Here we see the Annunciation angel, flying over Mary to tell her of the news of her immaculate conception.
The work is sublime and is in the style of Renaissance art.
As you can see Renaissance art is more stylized rather than realism in the more modern era.
The multicolored wings were unusual for the art of his day, and adds to the glorification of the angel figure by Monaco.
This work is an example of Renaissance art of Italy producing works which were of religious subject matter, as art evolved from religious works to that of royalty and eventually to the depiction of everyday life.
Here’s another angel wall tapestry:

This one is based on the work of Abbott Handerson Thayer from 1887, an American artist.
Here we see a more modern angel with white garments, where her wings look like the garments themselves.
It is a beautiful work showing an angel based on traditions of white and innocence, however with a style is that of Thayer.
So again in contrast, we see a realism coming through, with more modern garments, yet with a style that is typical of the semi illustrative style of Thayer.
