One of the incredible effects of a medieval tapestry is that it can turn a room into one which feels totally artistic.
What do I mean?
When medieval art is added to a room, the effect is immediate and draws many comments. See my previous blog post here on medieval tapestries and its 3 types.
When art is added to a room, there is a shift in its feel.
One of the most popular images for medieval style art is Godspeed tapestry based on the work by Pre-Raphaelite painter, Edmund Blair Leighton (1853-1922).

He was an artist of the 19th century with a love of scenes from the medieval period.
He was even said to romanticize the idea of life in the middle ages.
The knight was a quintessential part of life in the Middle Ages.
Life in the Middle Ages was on one hand difficult as there was much harshness in life due to brutal battles. However, the values of chivalry and romanticism began to flourish.
As made popular by productions of Merlin and Arthur illustrating the contrasting life between the royal blood line and servants and commoners, our notions of life in the medieval period in Europe has been formed.
Here’s another new variation of Godspeed tapestry:

Another artist depicting themes and literature from the medieval period was John William Waterhouse (1849-1917).

Waterhouse produced work based on literature including Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem from 1832 about the Lady, Lady Shallot, who loved Sir Lancelot.

Sir Lancelot was a knight of the Round Table of the Arthurian Legends.

Though he was most well known for his love affair with Guinevere, the love of Arthur, he was of course a most trusted knight.

Here is the new Lady of Shallot tapestry here:

The legend of Lady Shallot is the story of a young woman who was enchanted to not be allowed to look at the world directly, and only through a mirror.

From what she saw, she created art in the form of a tapestry.

Here, the lady is traveling through the marsh lands with a tapestry on her boat.

And the legend of Lady Godiva is depicted in John Collier’s work here:

The Lady Godiva is riding through the town of Coventry naked, in an agreement that if she did so, then her husband would release his people from their taxes.
Here she rides in privacy as her husband proclaimed that none shall look upon her while naked.
However, Peeping Tom does have a look, and it is from this tale that this phrase arises.
The gothic medieval architecture is seen here most beautifully.
This is just a small sample of our new tapestries.
So go for it and transform your room and home with medieval art, which is distinctive in its style, and the beauty it brings to a setting.
