This world map tapestry is based on the work of cartographer, Frederik de Wit (1629-1706). Wit is a Dutch cartographer from Gouda who produced exceptionally beautiful works.
You can find out how map tapestries came about in our previous blog post about world map tapestries here.
Here we see his work with the heading translated to “a new world map by the authority of F. de Wit”.
The work is filled with beautiful detail of the world atlas with some missing details from North America, Canada and Australia as these areas were not fully mapped by explorers in the 17th century.
The world maps from this century were concerned with both art and science.
Cartographers were both artists and scientists at the same time, producing works of scientific accuracy as well as artistic merit.
Wit’s works published in his lifetime passed on to his son, and subsequently to Johannes Covens who founded Covens and Mortier in 1721, which then went on to be one of the largest cartographic houses in the 18th century.

In this world map we see a work by Henry Hondius (1573-1650), a Dutch cartographer.
Hondius also produced remarkable works of world maps with mythological scenes surrounding the maps.
Here we see the accuracy of the world maps, again in this time period with missing land mass outlines in Northern America and the whole of Australia.
Since this work is based on Hondius who lived a generation before de Wit, we see more land masses missing from his map.
Still, the work is remarkably beautiful.

In Global Safari we see a map scene decorated with palms.
There are tropical flora, a globe, a book and a background created with a map detail.
The tropical areas of the world are a fascination for map makers and cartographers and they created works for these areas to show the unique flora and flora of these exotic areas.
These are just some of our new world map tapestries.
