Azure Tapestry

This tapestry 'Azure' is based on a design by artist Mary Beth Zeitz, and features a scrolling leaf and floral design punctuated by animal figures through the design. Zeitz studied art in France has traveled throughout Europe which has provided a prominent influence on her works depicting beautiful floral designs. In 'Azure' the elegant design is typical of that in a French portiere, a tapestry used to adorn walls and even doorways in French homes and palaces. In these portieres, elements and motifs from nature including the acanthus leaves, buds and flowers. In this portiere tapestry, an ingenious addition of small and larger creatures such as rabbits, goats, peacocks, horses and lions, and an azure blue scroll design to anchor the piece.
