Born in 1866, Helen Beatrix Potter was to become one of the world's most popular children's story writers and illustrators. She grew up in an almost idealied setting, experiencing the bountiful natural surrounds of Scotland. It was in 1901 when she fell in love with the Lake District and began sketches of a red squirrel colony that her fate in becoming a well known author and illustrator came to be. It began with a privately published book 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit'. In this tale, we hear of the adventures of Peter Rabbit, his sisters Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail, and his mother. In this story, Peter decides to wander off into the garden of Mr. McGregor, which was forbidden by his mother, and encounters a variety of adventures and situations before escaping back to his family. This book was followed by many others, 23 in all, including 'The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin' in 1903 which was another success, depicting the tales of Squirrel Nutkin, his brother Twinkleberry and cousins sailing to the Owl Island on twig rafts, encountering the resident owl Old Brown on the island.
