This tapestry "Cherry Blossom" is based on the work "Branches of Almond tree in Bloom" by van Gogh. This version has the original design of the knotted wood branches and the buds and flowers in bloom but the flowers in this work are pink to represent that of cherry blossoms. The original almond tree had light yellow blossoms as in its related tapestry "Almond Blossom". Van Gogh was influenced by Asian and Oriental art and culture in a time when he was developing his mastery of impressionism. Along with other impressionistic masters, he was fascinated by Japanese art and all things Japanese. The treaty of Kanagawa between America and Japan in 1854 ended over 216 years of Japanese isolation. Following this event, an enormous flow of Japanese art, including woodblock art flowed from Japan to Europe, especially to the Netherlands and to France. Van Gogh saw for the first time, Japanese prints in 1885 and began a love affair with Japanese art and prints and began painting traditional objects of Oriental and Japanese culture in his own works including the one with the fruit blossoms. Cherry blossoms or sakura are symbolic of Japanese culture for their beauty and they symbolise the ephemeral and transient nature of life, as they bloom on mass, like passing clouds. Here we see Van Gogh's view of them in his unmistakable impressionistic style. This tapestry is backed with lining and tunnel for easy hanging.
