Chevalier Crest

Chevalier Crest
While the name Chevalier certainly sounds chivalrous enough, it is actually Old French for “horseman and rider”. The word originates from the Latin callabus, meaning horse. In medieval times, the only ones who could afford a horse were wealthy landowners and noblemen. The surname Chevalier originally applied to the occupation of knight’s servant. The knights themselves usually carried the name of the family from which their nobility came from. The first to use the name Chevalier oddly enough, was the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain, not the French. Their lovely family shield shows their heritage as servants of the knights. The knight and his armor are prominently included in the family crest, including the charging one on horseback at the top of the design. This tapestry comes unlined and has a tunnel for easy hanging and display.
