This elephant tapestry shows the regal elephant in royal attire, based on the Aubusson tapestry from the 19th century. The original of this work is in the Louvre. Here in this piece, we see an exotic scene filled with oriental plants, flowers, palm and elephant in full royal garments. The French fascination with Oriental subjects grew in the 17th to 19th centuries as explorers returned from Asia with descriptions and stories of all things exotiv. Here we see an Indian elephant with richly colored garments. This tapestry "Elephant" is backed with a lining and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
