Jugs on Ledge

This tapestry "Jugs on Ledge" is based on the work of artist Loran Speck. His works are inspired from the great masters of Rembrandt and Rubens and in this piece, we see a still life of jugs and grapes resting on a ledge. His use of light as in all his works, is masterful. Here the light and creation of shadows on the pots itself as well as on the ledge itself helps create a feeling of a moment in time captured right there and then in this piece. The grapes resting on the very edge of the ledge creates a feeling of tension and the small bunch on the left next to the pumpkin as well as the single grape on the right creates a feeling that this scene was very recently constructed by placements of these grapes here and there. Filled with auburn tones, the interplay of color here in this work is most captivating. The satisfyingly saturated green complements the deep yellow and the purple of the grapes beautifully especially when accentuated by the copper and browns of the ledge and background.
