Justice

Justice is being depicted here in this fine tapestry that builds upon the original fresco by Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530). One of the four virtues (faith, hope and charity are the others), del Sarto’s interpretation of Lady Justice is magnificent. In it, his mastery of the High Renaissance style is evident. A contemporary of Michelangelo, Raphael and da Vinci, del Sarto painted most of his works in Florence, which was the center of Renaissance art and culture. The detail of the work is remarkable and shows del Sarto’s fine craftsmanship as well as artistry. “Justice” was a surprisingly popular work, even in del Sarto’s time. The sophistication of Florentine art collectors is noteworthy by their desire to purchase such a work, considering that it is non-religious in subject matter. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
