This tapestry contains one of the most popular works of art of all time. Based on the work of Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli around 1482, the work has been quoted as "one of the most written about, and most controversial paintings in the world." The work is thought to be commissioned by one of the Medici family and depicts a group of mythological figures in an orange grove and is seen to represent the vigorous rebirth in Spring, though many scholars have explored other meanings of this work. One of these refers to the illustration of Neoplatonic love in this work. We see Venus presiding over the garden orchard with the cherub Cupid above her. Beside her is Primavera in the flowered dress the personification of spring itself. To the right is Zephyrus who captures Chloris a nymph, who he later weds and transforms into a deity to become the goddess of Spring. To the left are the Three Graces, who in Greek mythology are present the virtues of charm, beauty, and creativity, and flanked to the side by Mercury the messenger and god of trade. Full of allegory and mythical meanings, this tapestry reveals the richness of composition in the art of the times. This tapestry is backed with a lining and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
