Map of Rome

In this tapestry 'Map of Rome' we see a map and historical buildings of the 'eternal city' which is one of the most prominent cities in western history. In this work, we see a map of Rome with highlights on its river and land contours, with scenes of battle on chariots, Roman ruins and kings in the main section as well as on the border of the work. Rome was believed to have been founded in 625 BC and was ruled by kings before the people overthrew royalty and began a rule by senate to reflect a more democratic rule, with a consul appointed to rule for a one year period. Eventually the city was overrun by Barbarians from Europe and with the reign of Constantine I, and established Rome as the centre of the Catholic Church. The Renaissance movement spread from Florence to Rome at this time and resulted in great works of art and architecture. This tapestry is a homage to this great city which has been of central importance to Western history. This tapestry is unlined, and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
