Mont Saint Michel

Mont Saint Michel
Constructed on a rocky tidal island in Normandy France, this sanctuary became a symbol of freedom during the Allied landing during World War II. This tapestry captures the grandeur of this islet abbey, which has monastic structures that date from the 13th century and are considered outstanding examples of Gothic architecture. The tallest building, the abbey church in the center of the tapestry, soars 240 feet above sea level. It is surrounded by shops, small houses and the Benedictine abbey itself. Built on solid granite, Mont Saint Michel (Mount Saint Michael in English) was originally built as a medieval castle. The two large towers still dominate the entrance to the castle. This tapestry is unlined and is finished with a tunnel for easy hanging.
