Pastorale

Pastorale
Meaning countryside or farmland in Italian, “Pastorale” is true to its word. Based on a scene entitled Sacrifice to Cybele, which was the work of Jan Brueghel de Velours (1568-1625), the scene centers on Cybele, the goddess of the earth. Seated in the center, she is surrounded by cherubs and attendants who see to her every need. The lush detailing, use of cherubs, and the mythical composition are typical themes throughout de Velour’s work. Although he was an accomplished landscape artist, he was particularly drawn to this mythical subject matter. Even when incorporating religious or mythological themes into his works, he often portrayed them in natural settings, such as those in “Pastorale”. His blend of nature with fantasy works nicely in this tapestry. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
