The Creation

One of the last panels of the Sistine Chapel to be completed, Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam” is perhaps his best known work from this period in his career. This version focuses on the outstretched hands of Adam and God, the Father. It is at the moment of creation as God breathes life into Adam for the first time. Lying on a kidney, which during Michelangelo’s time was believed to be essential for the body to stay alive – hence its representation as life in art of the time – God reaches out for the outstretched hand of Adam. His arm seems lifeless, while God’s appears full of life. This is arguably one of the most famous and most appreciated images in the world.
