The Eiffel tower

The Eiffel tower
When the Eiffel Tower was built for the World Exhibition in 1889, celebrating a century since the French Revolution, there was a general outcry from artists of the time who thought the huge object wouldn’t fit into the architecture of Paris. My, how times change. Contemporary artists such as Cristin Atria, who created this work, flocked from all over the globe to capture this iron wonder in film, paint, charcoal and pastel. For Atria, the chosen medium is black and white photography as a starting point. She then layers oils over the work to create texture and depth. The result is a cross between a sepia photo and a painting. The original lines and details of the photograph remain, but the piece takes on a slightly surreal look because of the painting technique. This unique tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
