The Book of Hours or “Les Tres Riches Heures” is a famous work depicting life and times of the Middle Ages. The book was completed in 1416 and was illustrated by the 3 Limbourg brothers of Flanders. This piece depicts the calendar texts for the month of August. This was the traditional month for hawking in the medieval period, a popular sport for the royals and noblemen. Here we see the nobles on a horseride with their hunting hounds, heading towards the woods nearby. In the background, we see Chateau d’Estampes, their home. Rich in detail and design, this tapestry is a wonderful chronicle of the art and literature from this time in the Middle Ages. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
