The month of August - with border

The month of August - with border
The work of the medieval “Les Tres Riches Heures” (The Book of Hours) lives on even to this day, more than 600 years later. One of the most famous books of the Middle Ages, the work was painted by three brothers, Paul, Hermann and Jean Limbourg of Flanders. The book itself was completed in 1416 and contained texts for each hour of the liturgical day. These were supplemented by the illustrations of the Limbourgs. This particular piece from The Book of Hours depicts the calendar texts for the month of August. This was the traditional month for hawking in the Middle Ages. In this work, we see nobles going for a horseride, with by their hawks in hand, heading towards the woods for the hunt. Behind them in the distance is Chateau d’Estampes. It is a terrific chronicle of the art and literature of the time. This tapestry is lined and comes with a tunnel for easy hanging.
