The Source
The Flemish region of Oudernaarde represented the peak of verdure tapestry production in the 17th century. The Flemish tapestry makers, with the protection of James I, settled in the region of Morlake and their output was considerable. This verdure scene created in various shades of rich blues and greens, with a golden glow emanating from the foliage gives this scene and exuberance and energy that makes this particular work renowned. The forest is shown along with the spring source of the river water for the village and the country manor among the foliage. The skillful use of detailing in the foliage gives a sense of movement to the leaves and foliage which again brings this particular tapestry to life. This tapestry is backed with a lining and tunnel for easy hanging.
