Wand Chaumont

Wand Chaumont
Looking like a castle from a fairy tale, Chateau de Chaumont is the subject in this fine tapestry. Built in the 10th century, the chateau originally was intended to serve as a fortress. As with most castles, it was burned and then rebuilt several times. It later became the home of Catherine de Medici who entertained such luminaries as Nostradamus there. Based on classical Gothic designs, the castle’s beauty not only comes from its striking architecture, but the grounds upon which it stands. The castle is open to visitors today and one of the highlights of the tour is the Council Chamber, which is adorned with 16th century tapestries showing the gods of each of the seven planets that were known at the time. This tapestry is unlined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
