A Mon Seul Desir

Meaning "With My Only Desire", A Mon Seul Desir tapestry is the main work in the series of six tapestries known collectively as "Dame a la Licorne". Commissioned by Jean Le Viste, the entire series was woven in the mills of Flanders in the early 16th century, most likely 1511. It commemorates Le Viste's ascension to the royal court of King Louis XI. This piece features a lady and her lady in waiting. She is seen placing her jeweled necklace into her jewelry box. It is thought to mean the rejection of temptation and self-denial. As with other pieces in "The Lady with the Unicorn" collection, the family crest of the Le Vistes is portrayed on the two banners. After Jean's death, the series passed from one family member to the other. Today, it can be seen at the Musee National du Moyen Age in an oval room specially built for the six tapestries. A Mon Seul Desir tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
