Bayeux Banquet Detail

This tapestry “Bayeux Banquet” shows a detail from the extraordinary Bayeux tapestry. Here we see a detail from the banquet after the victory at the Battle of Hastings by Duke William, whereby he became the first Norman king of England in December 1066. Here we see skewers of food prepared by cooks and chefs, and enjoyed by William and his lords, and served on a banquets table. The border is intricate with an array of real and mythological animals providing an ever present decoraton for the entire storyline in the Bayeaux tapestry. It is art such as these that we gain insights into the life and culture of medieval society nearly a thousand years ago.
