In this tapestry “Duke William Departs” we see Duke William departing for battle with his companions in the Battle of Hastings of 1066. William eventually became the first Norman ruler of England. The battle of Hastings lasted one day and occured on Senlac ridge, which in the present day is the town of Battle in East Sussex, with equal numbers on both sides. It was thought that William had the advantage of having many more archers. In this tapestry we see the medieval designs of the soldiers on horseback and a decorative border of real and mythological animals. This tapestry “Duke William Departs” is backed with a lining and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
