Exotique tapestry shows a scene from a set of ten ten tapestries called “The History of the Chinese Emperor” commissioned by Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, son of King Louis XIV. The original were produced for the Beauvais Manufacture in Paris. Tales and stories of exotic adventures were prominent in France at the end of the 17th century, when the Jesuit missionaries were returning from China. These tales were to influence the royal courts of Europe and as a result, their art. These tapestries, very exotic for the time, were initially made for the Rambouillet castle. This scene is from the tapestry scene called harvesting of pineapples or La Recolte des Ananas. The details in the palm tree is lush and exotic and the illustrative sky provides an atmospheric backdrop to the scene. The Oriental building in the background shows Chinese influence in its details. This exotic landscape tapestry “Exotique” comes complete with lining and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
