Grand Harbor I

An absolutely grand and opulent scene of the harbor beholds us in Grand Harbor I tapestry. This work was originally woven in Beauvais at the end of the 18th century after a period of unusual creativeness under the rule of Napoleon the 3rd. The tapestries of the Manufactuer de Beauvais including this of Le Port De Toscane were famed for their uniqueness and this tapestry is now part of the Mobilier national collection. This tapestry transports us instantly in time and place to the life in the 18th century where art and artistry reigned, as we see a scene where musical instruments and a red drape, surrounded by a rich floral arrangement overlooking a grand balcony with balcony, columns and Greek and Roman architecture, towards the harbor where a sailing ship has just taken off to distant lands for trade and exploration. Science and art were equals at this time and place and this tapestry with its beautiful colors, is our portal into this world.
