Inspired by the art of ancient Rome, the Grotesque style was fashionable throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. "Grotesque elephant" was one of six tapestries designed in this fashion by artist Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer. It was most likely woven by the Gobelins Manufactory in 1687 and finished in 1688. Monnoyer was one of France's most well-known flower painters in the 18th century, but also dabbled in historics, still life and portraits. It's more than likely that he based his sketches on the groundbreaking work of Jean Berain. During his lifetime, Monnoyer collaborated on many pieces for Gobelins and Beauvais, but this is the only series attributed entirely to him. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
