This handwoven tapestry "La Licorne a la Fontaine" shows the unicorn at the fountain in wonderful detail. From the series of medieval unicorn tapestries called "La Chasse" this piece shows the unicorn being hunted by hunters looking for the immortal creature, and the unicorn is cleansing the village stream with his horn, which is thought to clean the river of impurities due to the magical properties of the unicorn's horn. The detail is simply gorgeous as is the fine gradation of colors which is distinctive of handwoven tapestries. The flurry of people is seen around the forest foliage that surrounds the central fountain, decorated with pheasants, weasels, lions, stags and other forest creatures who can now refresh their thirst in the cleansed water source. The verdure qualities of the foliage in the forest is exemplary and corresponds well to the dramatic sky. The originals were created between 1495 and 1505 in Brussels and was thought to be commissioned by Anne of Britanny for her marriage to Louis XII, the King of France. This handwoven tapestry "La Licorne a la Fontaine" is lined, and has a rod pocket for easy hanging.
