Chronicling the Norman Conquest of England, the original Bayeux tapestry was more than 230 feet long. It was commissioned by the half brother of Duke William for display in Bayeux Cathedral. This panel shows Harold of Wessex as he prepares for his trip to report to Guillaume that he, Harold, has been chosen as the heir to the English throne. He is shown enjoying his final meal in England before heading out in the open sea for Normandy. Unfortunately, his cousin William had also been promised the throne. The Latin inscription, Ecclesia, Hic Harold Mare Navigavit Et Velis, translates roughly to mean "Here Harold took to the sea." This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
