Part of the larger work known as “The Forest”, the subject of “Lion” in this lion tapestry is shown flanked by a fox and a hare. While the larger piece was commissioned by Aleco Ionides and designed by William Morris (1834-1896), “Lion” was the work of Henry Dearle (1860-1932), a colleague of Morris and Burne-Jones. As with many of their tapestries of the period, the scene is embellished with a background rich in foliage. In this case, it’s acanthus leaves, a signature of Dearle’s work. The original hangs in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. As a discerning collector, you’ll appreciate its amazing detail, striking composition and fine weave. This tapestry, based on the famous work by William Morris, is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
