Madonna from Manchester

This Renaissance religious wall hanging "Madonna from Manchester" shows the work of Michelangelo from 1497. This tapestry shows the completed portion of an unfinished work by Michelangelo depicting the Christ child indicating a passage from a scroll, with his cousin, John the Baptist, sometime after their return from Egypt. It is thought that the scroll contained information of his future sacrifice, which is why the virgin Mary is holding the scroll away from him. The Virgin is depicted here with one breast bared. Over her left shoulder, two angels are reading the scroll, contemplating its meaning. The work is named after Manchester after a display of the original work there in 1857.
