Melchior I

Filled with the most gorgeous colors and exquisite detail, this medieval tapestry "Melchior I" shows John VIII Palaiologos or Palaeologus, who was the Byzantine Emperor from 1425 - 1447 in Constantinople. This work is derived from the artwork of Italian Renaissance painter Benozzo Gozzoli (1421 - 1497). Here we see the extraordinary beauty of the King's garments, as well as that of his young noblemen. Even his horse has regalia fit for a king. The party is parading through the countryside, with a view of the castle and gardens in the background, with a gorgeous midfield grove of plants and flowers. John VIII Palaiologos was the eldest son of Manuel II Palaiologos and Helena Dragas and was co emperor with his father before he become emperor in 1425. The original of this work decorates the Magi Chapel in Florence, and is his most famous portrait. The balance of color and tonal variations are exceptional in this work.
