Though this scene played out thousands of times in 18th century Venice, the artwork of Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) makes it look fresh and original. A galleon has just dropped anchor in the harbor and the merchants have begun to disembark into Venice proper. Guardi came from a family of artists and this scenic is known as a “vedute”, or view painting. He is one of Venice’s most celebrated painters, even though he only focused on the city and its vistas toward the end of his life. Like many artists, he lived in virtual obscurity during his lifetime and died penniless. Today ironically, his work is highly prized and collectible. Guardi’s work can be found in many public and private art collections throughout Europe. “Mercanti” is striking in its detail and is true to the original. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
