Of all the symbols of Indian culture, the elephant is perhaps the most well known. In this Asian tapestry we see the work of artist Debra Swartzendruber. Here we see the elephant calling with his trunk raised. His royal regalia is on his head and back, and we see the royal palace in the background, complete with palm trees. The elephant is an important part of Indian culture, from their role in transportation of royalty, to a symbol of strength of mind in Buddhism to assets used in war. Their involvement also includes that of a number of elephant festivals throughout the year. The use of earth and red tones in this tapestry evokes the exotic scene that this Oriental scene is representing. The works of Swartzendruber reflect her inclination to portray animals and this piece sees her take an Asian theme. This Asian elephant tapestry "Old World Elephant II" is unlined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
