A fantastic world of fantasy springs to life in “Panoramique”. The style of enhanced natural landscapes — in which elements are added that simply did not exist — became popular in the 17th century. Travelers would return from far off lands with tales of exotic places, animals and cultures. Here, one can see palm trees, a small pyramid and some Greek temples off in the distance in a land created by the artist himself. The foreground is French, however, as if the artist painted the portico as it actually was and then filled in the background with fantasy. This style remained very popular through the 18th century, and this work was woven at Gobelins. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
