A famous Greek geographer in Alexandria, Egypt between 87 and 150 A.D, Ptolemeaeus is the subject of this old world map tapestry. The entire map of Europe is contained within the woven embodiment of Ptolemaeus who was not only a famous geographer in his time, but an astronomer and mathematician as well. He was well known for his Greek geocentric view of the universe and his retrograde motion of the planets theory was the accepted wisdom until Copernicus came upon the scene in 1543. Tapestries were often used by churches in Medieval times to teach lessons to their congregations. One would hope this one was not used to teach European geography. Nevertheless, it is beautiful piece of historic art. This tapesry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
