This religious wall tapestry “Santa Chiara (St Clare)” shows the work by Simone Martini in the Lower basilica of San Francesco, in Assisi. Santa Chiara or St Clare was an Italian saint and was one of the followers of St Francis of Assisi. She was the founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, and wrote the work “Rule of Life” for these women, and was the first woman known to write a monastic rule. Clare was a devout young woman who wanted to wait til she was 18 before she married, though her paretns wanted her to marry at age 15 to a wealthy man. At age 18 she heard the preaching of St Francis of Assisi, and she was told that she was a chosen soul from God.
