The Bayeux tapestry is one of the most well known tapestries in the world. At 230 feet in length, it dates to the 11th century and chronicles the Norman Conquest. This particular scene from the larger work shows the Normans arriving at Hastings. William the Conqueror’s men are disembarking in England, heading inland to eventually engage Harold’s huge army. His victory and ascension to the throne marked the last time Britain has ever been conquered by a foreign power. Shortly after the battle in 1066, the Bayeux Tapestry was commissioned by the Bishop of Bayeux, William’s half brother. The original 230-foot masterpiece is still on view today in a specially built museum in Bayeux, France. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
