Van Gogh The Bedroom tapestry depicts Van Gogh’s bedroom based on the original created in 1889. Van Gogh wrote to his bother Theo before he began work on this piece, saying “This time it simply reproduces my bedroom; but colour must be abundant in this part…” His home was located at 2 Place Lamartine, Arles, Bouches-du-Rhone, France, known as his Yellow House. The door over to the right was the entryway for the staircase to the upper floor, and the door to the left was to the guest room for Gauguin. On the front wall the window opened to Place Lamartine. In fact the room was not rectangular in shape, but was trapezoid, with its obtuse angle in the left corner presenting a challenge to represent this shape accurately in two dimensions. This “Van Gogh The Bedroom” tapestry is backed with a lining and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
