If Edward the Confessor had been clearer with his wishes, perhaps the Norman Conquest would have never happened. If Edward the Confessor had been clearer with his wishes, perhaps the Norman Conquest would have never happened. Edward had promised the throne of England to Harold of Wessex as well as to Duke William of Normandy. "William Embarks" shows William as he readies his armies to fight King Harold in the Battle of Hastings. The year is 1066. Known as the Bayeux Tapestry, the original is still on display at Bayeux Cathedral. It is 230 feet long and depicts the entire event from start to finish. The original was actually embroidered, not woven. Though it is a Norman document, most scholars believe it was actually embroidered by the English, not the Normans. This wonderful tapestry is lined on the back and has a tunnel for easy installation and display.
