Overflowing with symbolism and religious overtones, “Maria Dolorosa” depicts the Madonna and Child. “Maria Dolorosa” literally means “The Grieving Mother”. It’s as if Mary already knows the fate of her young child, as do her attendants. Their sorrowful faces capture a deep sadness that is almost mournful. Though they foreshadow a time in the future when the Christ child will die for their sins, the halos over the Virgin Mother and her Child confirm their holy mission on earth that few others understood. It is a beautiful, serene scene that depicts the beginning of Christianity and the faith of followers in the Immaculate Conception and subsequent birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ. It is typical of themes that have been painted in the Renaissance. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging. Note: tapestry rod and tassels, where pictured, are purchased separately.
