“These are the arms of certain knights of the Round Table bidden to seek the sangreal who departed on the quest whatever might befall”. So begins the inscription along the top of Deer & Shields tapestry. The shields of the knights departed in search of the Holy Grail are shown hanging from trees in the forest. They include: Sir Gawaine, Lancelot, Hector, Perceval, Bors, and Galahad. The superb detail in “Deer & Shields” is awesome and captures the luscious verdure scene in all its glory. This tapestry is part of a series of six panels that illustrate the quest for the Holy Grail. They were originally designed by Edward Burne-Jones and woven by Morris & Co, and the original can still be seen at Birmingham Museum in England. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
