This La Manta’s Freasco II tapestry shows 4 historic figures from the Nine Worthies or Nove Prodi. The artwork is based on the fresco from the Castello della Manta painted by the Master of Castello della Manta, in Saluzzo, in Piedmont in Northern Italy in about 1420. It is said that the art was inspired by the poetry of Marquess Thomas III of Saluzzo, Le Chevalier Errant or the Wandering Knight, written in 1394 is about a knight’s life where he encounters love, fortune and knowledge, a homage to medieval chivalry. The nine worthies includes three Christians, three Jews and three non religious, though the exact figures can change depending on the artist. Here’s in La Manta’s version we see a male and three female figures in the elaborate attire. This tapestry “Flemish Village Scene” is backed with a lining and a tunnel for easy hanging.
