Mother and Child II – Kilmt

Mother and Child II – Klimt tapestry shows the famous motherhood themed art of Gustav Klimt. This tapestry is based on the work he created to celebrate womanhood and motherhood called the Three Ages of Woman from 1905. In fact, many of Kilmt’s works has women as its main subject. In this piece we see an intimate embrace of the mother and child, similar to the close embrace of couples in his other works including the Embrace and the Kiss. As usual, this work features his trademark of flowing hair and garments with flowers with the more geometric shapes amongst the softer elements. It is said that a Japanese influence exists in this work in the way he portrays facial expressions and body language to communicate the mood of the scene. Her golden orange hair contrasts with the child’s darker hair and is balanced by the cooler colors of blues.
