This portiere “Portiere Medieval Lion” tapestry shows a detail from the Lady and the Unicorn series of wall tapestries from the middle ages. In this piece, we see the protective lion in a mille fleur styled backdrop, holding up the pennant bearing the royal emblem or crest of the le Viste family, specifically to Jean Viste, who was a nobleman to the reigning King Charles VII. Commissioned from the tapestry makers in the famous tapestry region of Flanders in Belgium, and based on drawings from the 15th century, this piece shows the lion which is also present in the other Lady and the Unicorn tapestries featuring the lady, the unicorn and the lion. This unicorn portiere tapestry “Portiere Medieval Lion” is backed with lining and tunnel for easy hanging.
