St Francis from Assisi

This religious art tapestry "St Francis of Assisi" shows the work of Cimabue (1240-1301). The original is found from a fresco in the lower basilica of Assisi. Cimabue was a Florentine painter and creator of mosaics. Here in this work we see St Francis or St Francesco holding a bible with a golden halo around his head to signify his purity of spirit. St Francis of Assisi was born Giovanni di Bernardore in 1182 and became an Italian Catholic preacher. While going to war in 1204 he had a vision and transformed his life to that of a purely spiritual life. He founded the Franciscan order, and in 1224 he received the stigmata, and was the first person recorded to have done so since Christ. He is the patron saint of animals and the environment, due to his love of animals in his lifetime, and his feast day in on October 4th. This tapestry "St Francis of Assisi" is lined and has a tunnel for easy hanging.
