In this charming tapestry, we see Theophile Steinlen’s 1896 advertisement for a of the cabaret entertainers from Chat Noir. The Chat Noir first opened in November 1881 at Boulevard Rochechouart by Rodolphe Salis as “Cabaret Artistique” and later as Chat Noir or the black cat, and was considered one of the finest cabaret houses in France. It was closed after his death in 1897, and Picasso was among one of the artists who wanted to visit, but found the cabaret closed, when he came to see the Paris Exposition of 1900. In this work we see Steinlein’s poster art showing the black cat in rustic colors and style, with a design behind his head acting almost as a halo. The easy French charm of this work reflects the chic and stylish attitude of the cabaret life itself. This work is iconic and is a popular design of the chic yet illusive black cat. This animal art tapestry is lined and comes with a tunnel for easy hanging.
