Versailles Promenade – Detail

The magnificent grounds of Versailles are before us in this tapestry. Based on the original by Charles Le Brun in the mid 17th century, we see the expansive grounds and promenade leading to the Palace of Versailles in the distance. The overflowing basket of flowers and fruits and the foliage of the fruit trees and vines that line the path to Versailles can be seen here, as can the nobility and ambassadors strolling along the grounds. The original was produced by the Manufacture des Gobelins, the famous tapestry factory in Paris that produced hundreds of original tapestries under the reign of Louis the XIV. It is said that this was an unusually fertile time of tapestry production in French history and the production of tapestry works was required for the decoration of the palace where the royal family resided in.
